Against the clinical concern in orthopaedic surgery that even a 1-millimetre tremor may shift the surgical trajectory, and the communication barrier among surgeons, engineers and patent attorneys with disparate professional languages and priorities, ZYIP’s patent attorney did not request the technical disclosure upfront. Instead, the attorney joined the client’s engineers at the surgical simulation site to map schematic drawings to real operating scenarios. We established a regular tripartite alignment mechanism and precisely extracted the core innovation of the elastically pre-compressed intermediate transmission assembly. The patent titled Orthopaedic adapter device and medical equipment was successfully published, helping the client turn clinical pain points into core selling points of the product.
A joint team consisting of the orthopaedic department from a top-tier Class A tertiary hospital in China and an enterprise dedicated to the R&D and industrialization of orthopaedic surgical robots.
(1) Millimetre-level clinical risk: The attending surgeon was most concerned that even a 1-millimetre tremor at the instrument tip could deviate the surgical path. This real clinical pressure was the fundamental problem targeted by the structural innovation. (2) Inherent limitations of conventional structures: Traditional adapter structures inevitably transmit vibrational energy during swinging, a hard engineering constraint to resolve. (3) Complex tripartite communication: The patent project involved clinicians, the engineering team and IP service providers. Misaligned terminology and divergent demands drove high communication costs, often leading to ambiguous requirements. (4) Demand for precise scope of protection: The client did not want overbroad claims, but protection precisely covering the mechanical innovation of the elastically pre-compressed structure.
(1) First on-site visit to the surgical simulation lab The attorney volunteered to attend the surgical simulation session together with the client’s engineers. On-site, we linked abstract structural drawings to real operation scenarios and truly grasped what the client intended to protect.
(2) Establishment of a tripartite alignment mechanism Tailored to the special features of medical-engineering cross-disciplinary projects, we set up regular alignment sessions for the clinical team, engineering team and patent attorney. The mechanism aligned understanding and prevented information distortion in handover. For the first time, surgeons, engineers and the attorney discussed the same patent with shared context.
(3) Structured extraction of the core mechanism Building on consensus from the three parties, our team pinpointed the core inventive concept: the elastically pre-compressed intermediate transmission assembly filters vibrational energy. The claims were anchored to this functional innovation rather than superficial structural descriptions.
(4) Multi-layered limitations on structural details We added refined hierarchical limitations for structural features including hook connection of sliding sections, chain connection structures and guide posts of elastic sections. The resulting protection scope accurately covers the core innovation and resists simple structural substitution for design-around.
① Publication outcome: Orthopaedic adapter device and medical equipment was successfully published. The core innovation has become a key technical selling point for the surgical robot. ② Protection robustness: Centered on the core mechanism of vibrational energy filtering by the elastically pre-compressed intermediate transmission assembly, the claims incorporate precise multi-layered limitations on hooks, chain structures and elastic guide posts, delivering targeted rather than overbroad protection. ③ High client recognition: Upon project acceptance, the attending surgeon put it plainly: “Reducing tremor by one millimetre on the operating table means more than any number of papers.” This comment from the clinical frontline best illustrates the patent’s value. ④ Clinical and industrial value: The protected structural innovation equips domestic surgical robots with a competitive advantage and enhances credibility during clinical promotion. As a benchmark co-filing case between a top tertiary hospital and a surgical robot developer, it offers a replicable IP layout pathway for similar industry-university-research collaboration projects.
This case goes beyond conventional patent drafting for mechanical structures. It achieves synchronized communication across clinical, engineering and legal languages. For medical-engineering crossover patents, we protect not merely structures, but patient safety. Attorneys willing to step into surgical simulation scenarios and translate three sets of professional language into a shared framework are the true partners these projects need. It demonstrates that when an attorney invests the effort to master the client’s technology, the client will entrust their most valuable ideas. That trust evolves into a stable, well-defined core patent. The one millimetre of reduced tremor on the operating table thus gains solid legal backing.
